I recently went on a trip unlike the majority of trips I take – it was a trip to Las Vegas with four friends. Normally, when we are in Las Vegas it’s because we are enroute to California, or visiting our favorite places to see near Las Vegas including Valley of Fire State Park and Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. I’ve seen a Grateful Dead show at UNLV and slept in my truck in casino parking lots to save money on a hotel during a road trip. But I have never gone to Las Vegas just to hang out on The Strip or do “Las Vegas things.”
Best Things To Do in Vegas For Free
When planning this trip, I started looking for the best free things to do in Las Vegas, Nevada. If, like me, you are wondering what to do in Las Vegas for free, I have to tell you….not much. Las Vegas has gotten super expensive. Gone are the days of cheap buffets and free drinks (ok, maybe you can get a free drink, but it’s going to be crappy.) Rooms are not inexpensive. They are advertised at low rates, but you have to add at least $40/night in resort fees and taxes on the resort fees. Las Vegas shows are $100 and up.
Even if, like us, you plan to drop some money, you might want to supplement your stay with free stuff to do in Las Vegas or at least, inexpensive things to do in Vegas.
Most of the fun cheap things to do in Las Vegas involve walking up and down the strip, winding in and out of resorts, and seeing the displays and the free entertainment in Las Vegas.
Despite high prices, it’s still ranked one of the best family vacation spots in the U.S. because there are so many things to do with kids in Las Vegas.

The Fоuntаinѕ аt The Bеllаgiо
The famous Bеllаgiо fountains are a ѕресtасulаr ѕhоw оf dаnсing fоuntаinѕ ѕеt to a rаngе оf muѕiс from сlаѕѕiсаl to соntеmроrаrу. The show is every 30 minutes from 3pm to 8pm Monday through Friday and every 15 minutes from 8pm to midnight. On Sundays the show starts at 11am every 30 minutes until 7pm when the show goes on every 15 minutes until midnight. On Saturdays and holidays the shows start at noon every 30 minutes and change to every 15 minutes at from 8pm to midnight.
Yоu саn tell whеn a ѕhоw iѕ duе tо ѕtаrt аѕ a сrоwd ѕtаrtѕ tо gаthеr. We watched the fountains from the High Roller – a giant Ferris wheel that spins above the strip. This was second on my list of what do in Vegas for free only after the gardens at the Bellagio.

The Gardens at The Bellagio
The Bellagio Conservatory and Botanical Garden was the highlight of free things to do in Las Vegas today. The 14,000-foot conservatory is filled with flowers and trees in a seasonal display. I wouldn’t call it one of the best botanical gardens in the world, but it is impressive, especially for an indoor space.
It’s open every day except when they are changing the display. We were there over Chinese New Year and wandered around the “Year of the Pig” display.

The Volcano аt The Mirаgе
Only in Lаѕ Vegas саn уоu ѕее a volcano еruрt еvеrу night, well maybe that’s true of the volcano we climbed near Antiqua, Guatelmala, too. Yоu can ѕее thе Vоlсаnо реrfоrm it’ѕ еxрlоѕiоn at 8 pm, 9 pm, and 10 pm nightly outside Thе Mirаgе. It’s set to the music of The Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart and Indian tabla sensation Zakir Hussain.
It’s basically just like the time I saw the Dead play at nearby University of Las Vegas with a lightning storm in the background. Or maybe not, but this is one of the more popular free shows in Las Vegas strip.
Like many of these shows or displays, they make for fun, free things to do in Vegas with kids or a family.

View Art at The Cosmopolitan
We stayed at the Cosmopolitan and were able to walk by some of the best free art in the city. In the parking garage, artists including Kenny Scharf and Shepary Fairey have created murals called Wallworks.
The eight columns in the lobby light up and feature videos. An especially creepy one looked like someone was trapped in there and couldn’t get out. Steampunk-style sculptures are placed throughout the second floor, and there are even Artomatic machines that look like old cigarette dispensers but feature mini works of art rather than cigs. There’s more to see in the Cosmo, just wander around a bit.

The Fremont Street Experience
The Fremont Street Experience, downtown, has plenty of quality entertainment for free in the form of light shows and live music.
The whole area is covered by a 1,400-foot-long canopy with the world’s largest LED screen underneath. Light, sound, and video shows run on the Viva Vision screen throughout the night, usually on the hour.
This might be better considered one of the fun cheap things to do in Las Vegas because you are probably going to want to get a drink or at least some mini-donuts while you are there.
Take A Photo With the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” Sign
For “things to do in Las Vegas free” you can’t miss getting your photo taken with the famous Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign. It’s kitschy, it’s old school, it’s nostalgic. It should top your “10 Things to do in Las Vegas” list, even if it wasn’t free.
The famous Las Vegas sign is easy to get to and there is free parking. It’s located in the median at 5100 Las Vegas Blvd. South. Drive south on Las Vegas Boulevard past Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino.
Bonus: Free Tours in Las Vegas
If you are looking for free things to do in Vegas during the day, consider a free walking tour. Since you will be walking from free site to free site anyway, you can learn some of the history of the town and it’s stories.
Having a guide like Nomad Tours is great, but if the timing doesn’t work, try one of the self guided tours from Big Boy Travel.
Las Vegas Strip Tour
This tour with Nomad Tours takes two hours and covers around two miles of the world famous Las Vegas Strip. It will take in some of the city’s biggest attractions, including the Bellagio Fountains, Caesars’ Palace, and the MGM Grand. It will also teach you the history of Las Vegas, how it came about and how it was ruled by and subsequently taken from the mafia.
The Strip Walk
A free self-guided tour from Big Boy Travel takes you past all of the major sights and sounds of Las Vegas Strip. Starting at the North end of the Strip, this tour will take you past the casinos, hotels and entertainment venues that Las Vegas is famous for. There is too much to see all in one visit, this tour breaks it down into the must-sees. We used the Big Boy Travel tour in Salzburg, Austria and loved it.
Downtown Las Vegas Walking Tour
Big Boy Travel also does a downtown self-guided tour. Before the Strip even existed, Las Vegas started from humble beginnings in the downtown area of the city. The Golden Gate, the oldest casino in Las Vegas, still stands and can be seen on this tour. This is also the area where the first neon light was switched on in the city, in the Oasis Cafe in 1929. Today you can still see the ‘old fashioned’ side of Vegas with the antiquated neon signs and vintage touches.
Want to take a free walking tour from your couch or on your treadmill? Here you go.
